A LOCAL GUIDE TO Indianapolis, Indiana
Founded in 1821, Indianapolis was a planned city to be the seat of government for the state of Indiana. Its central location has earned it the nickname the “Crossroads of America”. More than 2 million people live in the Indianapolis metropolitan area, making it a vibrant urban area and one of the largest cities in the Midwest. The city is home to the famous Indianapolis 500 auto race held on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend every year.
History & Culture
Indianapolis boasts itself as the amateur sports capital of the United States. The NCAA headquarters is located in downtown Indianapolis and events such as the Final Four, Big Ten Football Championship game, and Big Ten Basketball Tournament are regularly hosted in the city. Indianapolis is also the home of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, located in White River State Park. The city has seven distinct cultural districts throughout the city in historically significant neighborhoods.
Transportation
Local public transportation is provided by IndyGo, which offers 31 different bus routes seven days a week. The Red Line Bus Rapid Transit is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in 2019. Indianapolis is also served by four interstate highways. Indianapolis International Airport offers non-stop service to dozens of cities nationwide and a handful of international destinations.

Indianapolis has an emerging restaurant scene with many local restaurants opening in the Mass Avenue, Fountain Square, and Broad Ripple cultural districts. St. Elmo’s Steakhouse, which opened in 1902, is well known for its signature shrimp cocktail. The historic City Market offers dozens of local fare options in a food court style.

Indianapolis is well known as a host of large sporting events. The city annually hosts the famous Indianapolis 500 auto race each May with many events centered around it. Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, also hosts the Big Ten Football Championship Game and is a regular host the NCAA Final Four.
